Bono has emergency surgery. :(

Recommended Posts

Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustainedduring tour preparation training. He was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit in a Munich hospital, and is under the care of neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Jorg Tonn and Dr Muller Wohlfahrt. Bono will spendthe next few days there, before returning home to recuperate.

Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates.

This doesn't sound good. Hope it doesn't lead to permanent problems for him. I don't know anything about medicine but involving a neuro surgeon would seem to indicate the spinal cord was involved. Anybody with medical knowledge care to do some educated speculation?

not good!! could be a hernia (hernia nuclei pulpos)

best case scenario:

The majority of herniated discs will heal themselves in about six weeks and do not require surgery. One study found that "After 12 weeks, 73% of patients showed reasonable to major improvement without surgery."

worst case:

Surgery should only be considered as a last resort after all conservative treatments (non-surgical therapy) have been tried, that did not alleviate the pain and heal the disc herniation....

not sure what the effects could be regarding to the up-coming concerts.... i hope they don have to postpone them, but on the other hand, i hope he takes good care of himself!! colleague of mine her husband suffers from this big time... but didnt wanna take it easy cause he was building their own, new house... result: 2 surgeries and a couple of weeks ago he's told he has to quit his job as a construction-worker.... he's only 38 years old!

That's what my husband had back surgery to correct, a herniated disc. He had an amazing doctor, but it took some weeks to recover, of course.

Did your husband manage a full recovery?

there's alot of different things it could have been...so speculating is pointless until more information is given....

I wouldn't say it's entirely pointless.  It creates conversation, causes no harm and shows that people are genuinely concerned for Bono's health. happy.gif

Yes, absolutely a full recovery!!! He was in pain off and on for YEARS, but never had surgery. He'd be laid up for days, taking pain meds, then finally the pain was just too intense and was not going away, so he scheduled the surgery. He had been out of town at a conference and when he got up from his seat, he turned around and just about collapsed. Just a movement that tweaked (to use the technical term, lol) his back to the point that he had to do something about it. I swear that surgery was the best thing ever . . . it was at least 5, 6, maybe 7 years ago and he has been pain-free ever since . . . . and he has not lost the weight or done any of the excersises that he's supposed to!!!!

It's human nature, I think . . . . . herniated discs are really very common though, so if one is to speculate, that's probably a good guess and haven't we read about Bono's back for years?

February 18, 2003

Bono is unable to attend the Dublin premiere of Neil Jordan's The Good Thief, his second cancelled appearance in the past week. Dublin media learn that Bono has a slipped disc in his back.

Oh no, I just heard. Poor man, how awful. Get well very soon Bono xx  He maybe on a cocktail of painkillers and muscle relaxants that'll make him as high as a kite so hopefully will subdue the pain at least.  Poor guy.frown.gif

Very glad to hear it completely helped your husband Janette. If this is what Bono has, I think it is, may he have the same success as your husband.

ok....i speculate that he had a disc herniation that was causing him extreme pain in his extremities, and/or numbness, causing him not to be able to hold onto his microphone.

The fact that this was not an outpatient procedure...that he is an inpatient for a few days....suggests that the surgery was not simple, and moderately invasive. i think 6 weeks minimum recovery time.....

I could be totally wrong of course........

Get well soon Bono....

in my opinion, you only have to speculate untill you're given more information,.... cause then its called 'knowing', and once you know, speculating is pointless??

Age and limits means nothing for people like him(us). grin.gif
