I hoped someone from the Zoo was there!!  And hoped I'd see a thread filling the rest of us in on it.....  I wanted to be there SO badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  But I'm on the west coast, and couldn't pull it together financially or time wise...  but my heart was there!

Plus I had to work so I couldn't watch it live, but as soon as I got home I watched the whole thing and LOVED IT!!

I love your pictures.......  anI'm so glad you were there, makes me feel like I was represented........

I also looked on line for estimates of attendance...  and haven't really found any....  can't wait to hear what you come up with...  it did look HUGE!

Hey, Nikki!

So sorry you could not be there but were present in  mind and spirit!  I and about 1/4 million others were happy to represent on your behalf! smile.gif

I was exactly mid-way down the Mall, but could still see the stage, sort of.  There were screens.

Being in the middle was actually really cool, because at the start of the rally, they were conducting tests on us--for example, by starting a human wave at the front by the Capitol and having it travel all the way back through the crowd to the end near the Washington Monument.  It took about 54 seconds for the wave to travel the full length.  Then they started the wave at both ends and the wave met in the middle--we had to wait about 1/2 minute for it to reach us, and it really was shocking to feel that surge approaching one from both sides!

I just want to reiterate that the photos I am posting I have harvested from around the web.  I had only my camera on my phone, which is not great, and there are so many higher quality photos on the web.  Glad you like them!

CBS put the figure at 215,000--but I think that probably only counts the mall itself and feels slightly short.  I think it was closer to 250,000 and maybe a bit more.  Massive nonetheless, and certainly a surprise for everyone, no doubt! Although, it should not have been....

 Heh!  wink.gif

It just feels so great that there was such a huge response.....  I know technically Stewart and Colbert are comedians, but there was so much more happening there...

I actually feel grateful to them for mounting a response of "reasonableness" to the tea party and their wild posturing.... and the montage of the media was perfect, esp. with Jon following up with using the remote to protect ourselves from the onslaught...

A lot of what they did was overtly funny, and yet sending a strong message......  really loved it!

Yeah, and it was not just a response to the Tea Party (although many in the crowd interpreted it that way.  I still need to post that category of signs/photos).

But if you read or listen to Stewart's closing remarks (link to video and text posted above), he says that his intention is to chastise the extremists on both ends, and to lament, with humor, the lack of moderate and reasonable discourse anywhere in our political process or media.  The democrats may try to co-op this event for their benefit, and may even succeed, since there were clearly overt liberal elements in the throng, and no overtly conservative ones.   But that would be missing the point....

I agree......  but I think personally, and most immediately, I was grateful for the aspect  that DID provide a counter weight to the Glenn Beck madness....

But I realize there was a larger message, and I was grateful for that too........ Jon's closing remarks were amazing....  very articulate and succinct.  And I thought he struck exactly the right tone.

I agree, Nikki. He did well with the politics, actually. The comedy show itself was a bit weak, but this does not matter as much.

I am willing to bet another year of unemployment that "Washington" and "the media" will miss the significance of and dismiss, this event. And it will take more time for the dynamics to grow to the point where it pops them dead in the upper lip so that they cannot ignore it any longer.

Jon Stewart cannot be (and does not appear to want to be) the serious "leader" of those sharing this will toward civility and moderation--but someone will, certainly, emerge.. Maybe by 2012 but  likely by 2014. Unless there really is a tempering within the existing systems. But, I doubt this and seriously suspect a good, hard pop in the lip is what will be required to get the message through.

Humor and satire-- as an effort to express what is really a very noxious and growing discontent-- is just a first, good-natured effort by a representative majority, and it is sure to be lost in the swirl of insane political and media egos currently "in charge."    Boy, for a bunch of very smart people, as a group these can be pretty damn daft.... Seriously.
