Recommended Posts

I can't even get my profile picture to be my avatar thing either I have been working on that for like 3 months... I so don't deserve to even enter this competition *sigh* far too confusing and high-tech for me
it takes awhile for the image to load up in your avatar. just wait a day or two smile.gif and i think your turtle is very Achtungish!

Xtra - i'm thinking CI means each catagory?

so, you can enter more than one? fashion, music, art?

I think it says only one submission per CI....so CI is the entire contest?

Its just a little too confusing....

Girls, I read that again and CI = Campaign. So, one submission per CI. Too bad though.

Ok so mine is all submitted now :) I don't think I will win the voter's choice one as I only have about 80 facebook friends and of the 80 that I have probably 20 at most care! Also I don't think I will win at all as it just doesn't scream Achtung Baby, in fact it is just a random picture lol well at least people will look at it and go awwwwwww he is so cute! Btw it is a picture of my tortoise. How do we share our pages on here so you can see? It has been years since I have been on this message board thingy they seem to have wiped all my posts :( on the old one I had 19,000 or so also I can't access my webmail or the paid forums anymore :S I am sooooooo out of touch with this place! Anyway enough of my rambling on. Good luck to all that enter :D xx
Thanks Lucy, Good luck to you too. 19.000 posts, that's impressive. : ) I didn't realise this is going to be a popularity contest. If that's so I'm not gonna win! lol Unless, I suddenly become the vibrant socialising friendface(facebook IT ref.) freak. (no offense to anyone) And of course it would only make sense to have a friendface to enter.

and what would be a fashion category entry--perhaps a photo of a pair of cool blue jeans?
Nice idea Spicy! It could really be many things!

Achtung Baby embodies a multitude of ideas and styles which are represented through the album cover artwork mosaic. The

squared collage of photos symbolise the spirit of the album, the 90s and the changes in Europe after the fall of the Berlin

wall. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary, U2’s team, including designer Shaughn McGrath and original photographer, Anton

Corbijn, are inviting artists to submit their photograph or artwork (can be an illustration, graphic design or painting) which

reflects today's global environment. The photographs and artwork should emulate the same meaning that is conveyed on the

 original album cover.

If Achtung Baby was released today, what photographs and/or artwork would be part of the collage?

ok, what do they want? for you to depict todays global environment, or if AB were released today-with stuff regarding berlin and europe?

global environment-do they mean shots of the polar bears swimming bc theres no land mass for them?

the tsumnami in japan?

the starvation in africa?

so little squares....to depict...what exactly????

the spirit of the 2011's? the spirit of the New Millenium?

so, the global recession?

the collapse of greece?

or do they mean to symbolize the spirit of the new millenium, thats all positive?

and what about that square thats of adam naked?

what would symbolize that in the new millenium?smile.gif

All of the above basically although I think we need another nude photo of Adam for the new Achtung Baby collage. I'll get right on that.... ;-)

A way to look at it is, imagine this album is being released now and you are on the design team for the album cover art. They want it to reflect the spirit of the album music, and today's world. Artistically speaking, that could mean anything. You can draw your inspiration from just about anywhere but it should not only reflect the spirit of the album but today's global environment. I'm not sure if I'm making any sense.

I entered. Winning's a long shot but I had to try. Keeping my fingers crossed. You are just allowed one entry per contest. When I went back to the entry area again, I only see the option to view my submission.

Good luck to all who entered. larry_happy.gifedge_happy.gifbono_happy.gifadam_happy.gif

Review

http://www.allmusic.com/album/achtung-baby-r1973542/review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Reinventions rarely come as thorough and effective as Achtung Baby, an album that completely changed U2's sound and style. The crashing, unrecognizable distorted guitars that open "Zoo Station" are a clear signal that U2 have traded their Americana pretensions for postmodern, contemporary European music. Drawing equally from Bowie's electronic, avant-garde explorations of the late '70s and the neo-psychedelic sounds of the thriving rave and Madchester club scenes of early-'90s England, Achtung Baby sounds vibrant and endlessly inventive. Unlike their inspirations, U2 rarely experiment with song structures over the course of the album. Instead, they use the thick dance beats, swirling guitars, layers of effects, and found sounds to break traditional songs out of their constraints, revealing the tortured emotional core of their songs with the hyper-loaded arrangements. In such a dense musical setting, it isn't surprising that U2 have abandoned the political for the personal on Achtung Baby, since the music, even with its inviting rhythms, is more introspective than anthemic.

Bono has never been as emotionally naked as he is on Achtung Baby, creating a feverish nightmare of broken hearts and desperate loneliness; unlike otherU2 albums, it's filled with sexual imagery, much of it quite disturbing, and it ends on a disquieting note. Few bands as far into their career as U2 have recorded an album as adventurous or fulfilled their ambitions quite as successfully as they do on Achtung Baby, and the result is arguably their best album.

gee, how would that look like today?

how about the tortured emotional core of the blind love?

and in 2012, who is so cruel?

we are one, but we are not the same, as in the Arab spring?

so tied to the global, and a part of the music....

the album is darker, more introspective

Seeking inspiration on the eve of German reunification, U2 began recording Achtung Baby at Berlin's Hansa Studios in October 1990. The sessions were fraught with conflict, as the band argued over their musical direction and the quality of their material. After tensions and slow progress nearly prompted the group to break up, they made a breakthrough with the improvised writing of the song "One". Morale improved during subsequent recording sessions in Dublin throughout 1991 to complete the album. To confound the public's expectations of the band and their music, U2 chose the record's facetious title and colourful multi-image sleeve.

so, in 2012, who was fraught with conflict, nearly broke up, but re-united?

Im thinking of the arab spring uprisings....well we hurt eachother then we do it again....

how to depict that in a picture....

what shining star will light the way?

Thank you Spicy..your posts get me thinking about the heart and soul of the album. There is so much in the world today that screams Achtung.

You should definitely enter.

That's a good idea. I've been known to design, well develop a design concept, that way. For this one, I had about three different design concepts. As I continued developing the designs, researching ideas, listening to the album & remixes, and working on each of them. One in particular is the one that stood out to me as my final design. I ended up finalizing and submitting that one.

I managed to figure out how to view the entries on accident when I was reviewing my own entry on my phone - again... I couldn't tell ya how I did it. But while I was there I had a look. There were a lot of entries, but out of the actual names of zootops, that I know of, there weren't many of us. Only a handful. A lot of entries though. Quite a wide variety of talent, and lots of chances for people to win. It would be really cool if one or more of them were zootops.
