Policing Of The Site

You know what's so funny about that? I didn't recognize Adam!!! I mean, not that I've had occasion to be recognizing any bit of him other than his face up until now, but until someone mentioned that that's what that piece of art was in the Weird Willie post, I didn't realize it was the famous album art.

We're so sheltered over here eh.

Ok and yes you may be right about the word patronizing. I thought that meant attending an establishment as a paying customer but it does have other meanings.

Paco, so sorry things are tough. Family is a trip and I do hope that yours will come around with time and healing. Take care.

Obviously Live Nation has never watched a PG-13 movie.  I've seen PG-13 movies do far worse than what's been posted in here.  The issue is that there is a particular album cover that was allowed to be printed around the world for everyone to see, but with the strict laws here in the US that particular album cover was changed...of course that wasn't the first time it happened to U2.  Since this message board is based out of the US, we will continue to see a lot of this censorship on this message board...plain and simple.

It is easy enough to find on the internet.  Not censored there.

I know...stupid isn't it?  Ironic that Adam wanted to show it off, but their own website won't allow it to be shown...LOL!

Can't see much that has been removed by mods in past few weeks, a few overly expletive comments and one or two nude pics thats all..

If you can point out which section / topic please, and who posted. Sometimes people delete there own content so maybe that was the case here.

Hey BW quick questionhow can a picture of an album cover by THIS band be deemed unsuitable for their own website>?

Bigwave, is that u in your avatar pic? Why am I getting that 'in love' feeling now? Women are human & now our hearts will go out to you & embrace you because you are such a teddy bear!

What can we do for you? How can we make you happy? (Within the bounds of what is legal & ethical & all that.) Look at what u have done. (Does your wife know u r using a teddy bear selfie pic?) There will probably be BigWave poetry written now, but others will not admit to it. Certainly this is not what Scout intended when she started this thread.

Paternalistic?  a bit sexually bigoted don't you think.

For all we know paco, the terms of service were wrtitten by the band members themselves.

I didnt write them....are you thinking that?

We all signed-up and joined I hope, having read them.

Have you read them?

protecting young children is not sexually bigoted...what are you trying to say?

I agree w/ Spicy on this.

Besides, just because Adam did something in the past doesn't mean it should be glorified now. He did a semi-pornish photo. He was also an addict w/ drugs & alcohol, but he has thankfully moved on from that. Good on him 4 it. Please don't get me wrong - I totally appreciate art - but we do not have to agree w/everything just because it's called 'art.' Long-time zootopes know enough to know if they're about to cross a line, but some go ahead & do it anyways. (Not saying that was the case here.) Making Bigwave defend himself over & over is so often unnecessary & often could be avoided in the 1st place.

That being said, I do think it might be an easier & happier experience all around if some of the recurring difficulties were given a section in the terms of service that simply state some particular things that will be kept off the site. :)

On Second Thought: My bad: I just double-checked the 'Terms and Conditions' & it's already there:

"You agree not to submit or post any User Content that:...is...sexually explicit..."  Slam dunk.

Can't say I've noticed any majorly strict mod deleting behaviour here...

I agree w/ Frank on this.

I didn't see any of the pics and the comments that were deleted so I don't know what are you talking about. Anyway, this has been a polemic debate, where are the limits policing the site, or whether it should have limits at all. I think it is better to have limits because there are minors and because some people take advantage of the anonimity in internet to make offensive and abusive comments and for me that is not the vibe I enjoy. All depends on the context and I know the comments are made to have fun but the rules are clear...

I guess in other context we wouldn't have this debate

And I can't understand why do you relate this debate to how do you live your sexuality and your nudity. Because you are calling "sexually bigoted" to someone you have even never met in person. What do you know?? As for me I don't have any problem as I have much health when I am nude and also when I am dressed...

I agree w/ Tan on this.

Don't worry Scout this has just been a particularly rough week with me. I'm just glad its the weekend and maybe I can get chance to relax. I was feeling a bit down after talking to someone who went through the same thing I'm going through. He said his family really fell apart after his dad died as well. then he told me things never really came back together until his mom died. that's not really what I wanted to hear either.  I don't know how normal or common this is after the death of a parent but currently I feel like the only thing I can do is try to keep distance from my family for the sake of my own mental health.  sorry if I took the topic for a spin in this direction.

Big hugs

Wow, PacoBear. I was just talking w/someone earlier today (where I live) about precisely 2 of the things u mention here. And my heart SO goes out to anyone who has lost a parent - or both.

First) I was telling my mom that mothers are often "the glue that holds a family together." She agreed w/me.

Then) The subject came up w/someone else about how some families split apart. (The specific subject happened to be the corrosive effect I've seen on some different families who value money & image too much. But of course the cause of family breakups can be all sorts of reasons.) I specifically was relating the story of someone I used to know who had to - as u yourself said - "keep distance from (their) family for the sake of (their) own mental health."

I will tell u what I told the person I used to know who told me she had had to split from her immediate family for her "sanity." (Which, by the way, I understood since I knew the interpersonal difficulties in her family.) I reminded her that there are people who are experts at this who have dedicated their entire professional lives to helping families who have these difficulties. And sometimes, the question is - what does anyone have to lose from trying that avenue of help?

Also, sometimes there are extended family members who truly have insight into how a problem developed - whereas the immediate members or those who have the difficulties 'cannot see the forest for the trees' because they are too close to the situation. Sometimes, someone who has been there close (or somewhat close) w/the family in the past truly has enough perspective that - combined w/your more detailed knowledge - might be what is needed. I wish u & your family so well, PacoBear. (And I will pray for your family.)

If that's true, that's a sad commentary on the entertainment industry. (Re: the PG-13 thing.) But nothing about that industry should surprise anyone. The entertainment industry is just that: an industry. And they don't give a u-now-what about anyone's kids. All it cares about - 100% - is appealing to the lowest common denominator for the sake of getting that 1 extra penny. Of course, there are some good people w/in that industry, but I'm talking about that industry in general. But I've seen PG-13 movies, too, & never once have seen full-frontal nudity.

(Btw, the tv rating-system doesn't count since that's all messed up & not uniform. 'Can't leave the fox to guard the henhouse' & all that. But I think that problem is being addressed as we speak.)

Wowza, Spicy: What a happy-maker! :D

I know you're into dance/electronic music, which I generally, don't get into much, but I Hugely love to hear different permutations of songs I love - different versions, different covers, sometimes just different live performances by the original band of the same song. THANKS for this! And the visual background not only is beautiful, but it also ties in w/ lines in the song ("Tides...upon my seas...").

I think u & I could co-found a 'Clocks song' fanclub. It would meet once per week to share 'Clocks' recordings. Lol. :)

yes, this is how a lot of people make the transition over into the world of hip hop...urban dance etc.

it takes doing stuff exactly like this to open ones mind to new things..

it opened my mind that is true.

I listened to rock versions done to dance, hip hop style...felt it in my body and came to "understand" and feel the beat in my soul, in my spirit

Spicy: I meant to mention but forgot to mention: I saw elsewhere {in the 'Don't Be Embarrased' (sic) thread, I think} that u like hip hop. I wanted to mention that, unlike electronic-dance (which I'm okay with but not big on), I do love some hip-hop!

Cool about u 'understanding' beats in your soul - in your spirit! B)

Too bad we don't have a dancing emoticon here. (I'm not thinking a dancing banana, though.) That reminds me that there was an awesome dance video that I had wanted to post in u2.com about a month ago, but didn't have time to. Totally different thing, though. It was a tango, Lol. (I loved it.)

Regarding the overall theme of the thread (less-than-civilized language & images), I was going to post a video of Robin Williams singing 'Blame Canada' at a past Academy Awards show because it's the theme of that song. But Robin does say a swear word in the middle of it, so... (He says the 'b' word - & no, I don't mean 'Bono.' :)) The song is from South Park.

But I highly recommend folks check it out on YouTube for fun! Just do a YouTube search for this: Robin sings.

Just musing, I remember Bono saying he doesn't like the distance between band and audience at gigs, Larry said a similar thing about Glasto, funny how their own site keeps their most devoted audience very distant from them and their news for years, we're not even at arms length, feels quite us and them. Ironic really.

Good point, Anjana.  I've thought the same.

Yep, I've thought it as well!

We reserve the right, but have no obligation, to monitor interactions between you and other users of the Site or take any other action in good faith to restrict access to or the availability of any material that we or another user may consider to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing or otherwise objectionable.

Obscene in the eyes of the band or the website? I think that is the question here. There are two different sets of morals we are being presented.

If there are 13-18 year olds that are offended by what happens here, then they should go find a PBS channel to peruse. U2 deals with adult issues. Period. (Yes... Issues that do include children, but not issues that they should have to confront.)

What is said on this site, regardless of its content in regards to perceived truths , should be spoken with equal level in line with what the band would say.

The issue here is that the band has nothing to do with the website and that is why many of us has left. It has become too commercial.

It is not about what 13 - 18 yr olds are or are not "offended" by. Teenagers don't set standards. Grownups do. For God's sake, if we left it up to what 13 - 18 yr olds want, we'd have what some u2.com users want - anything goes. Ain't happenin. Nor should it.

Where you say "some u2ers" you mean the hundreds of awesome adults that used to have a brilliant and free time here right?

The ones that could be adults in the company of other adults as we all knew there's not a 14 year old in the world that's hanging out in here, right?

And you're right. It "ain't happening"

That's the exact reason no-one comes here any more.

Probably best explained by Steve Averill in his talk at the weekend at the U2 Conference (why that image was used, and then subsequently 'edited'). As far as the Zoo goes, it falls under the no nudity policy in the House Rules. Might seem a contradiction as it was used unedited on the album originally, but this has come up before many times in the zoo and those who posted it again recently are aware that we have asked before it doesn't get posted, yet like to cause a stir and post it regardless just for that reason I suspect.

I guess its all about context.
