So can someone please explain what 'Black Friday' is? Never heard of it before. There were TV ads for it last week but they didn't say what it was. Is it something to do with the moon?

No. It's a day of excessive consumerism. It has been an American thing. It's the Friday after Thanksgiving. Stores open at ridiculous hours so customers can fight over "low sale price" items. Sadly, it seems to be spreading around the world.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. Think I'll support 'Buy Nothing Day'. 'Black Friday' seems to bring out the worst in people. Seriously sad.
