R.I.P. Thread

Recommended Posts

I was sure such a thread already existed, but I couldn't find it. (Mods, if I am mistaken, please feel free to place this post in the one that already exists.)

R.I.P., Bruno Ganz. He was the star of Wim Wenders two films, Wings Of Desire and Faraway So Close. Here's more info on him:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/16/obituaries/bruno-ganz-dead.html

He played an angel and now he is one...R.I.P., Bruno.

(If this is indeed a new thread, I hope everyone will use it for future passings of significance.)

I haven't seen either of those films, but I will make an effort to find them.

Probably like most people, I saw him in "Downfall" where he played Hitler. Perhaps inevitably, someone has made a new version of the 'angry Hitler' meme to mark his passing.

I shall try and look up some of his other film roles.

He was indeed most known here for his intense Hitler performance.in 'Der Untergang', the German name of the movie 'Downfall'.

Yes, I was familiar with that role too, but, since this is a U2 page, I went with the movies that had a U2 connection. (They’re my favorite Wim Wenders films too.)

He was also very good in Unknown (w/ Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger) and the Jonathan Demme remake of The Manchurian Candidate. I will miss his wonderful Swiss/German accent when he spoke English.

Again, R.I.P., Bruno.

Someone did actually make a video to mark his passing - but it's incredibly respectful. It contains clips from many of his other movies. I always found his performance of Hitler in Downfall to be something truly incredible; it was like he was being inhabited by him.

I've been thinking of him today, after I read about his passing. Nice to see this thread, thank you dmWay.  Wings of Desire is my absolute favorite film of all time. I can't count how many times I have watched it and I am moved every time.  And it's thanks to U2 that I discovered the beautiful films of Wim Wenders.

You're welcome. I was really upset to hear that he had passed. I liked his performances in every film I have seen him in. "Wings Of Desire" is an absolutely sublime film. I was somewhat underwhelmed by the Hollywood-ization of it in "City Of Angels" - not that it's a bad film (and U2 contributed IGWSHA to its soundtrack), but it's such a "lowest-common-denominator" version of it. Not every film has to be dumbed-down when it is remade. And, yes, I love Wim Wenders' films too.

In honor of Bruno and Wim, I feel moved to post U2's tribute to both of them in the video for "Stay":

I was just going to post about Peter. He was one of two Monkees who actually had musical performing/songwriting skills (along with Michael Nesmith - Davy and Micky both played their roles well too, but they were never musicians). Strangely, Michael and Micky are on tour this year - I'm sure he will be commemorated at the shows now.

People of a certain generation (like myself) grew up with "The Monkees" TV show on reruns; I couldn't imagine my childhood without it. The same TV station would have shown "The Brady Bunch", "Gilligan's Island", etc. at the same time as The Monkees show. Lots of laughs - many of them dumb ones, but still fondly had.

The Monkees proved they could do edgy (at the time) comedy too - if you have ever seen their movie "Head", you'll know what I'm talking about.

Well, Peter, jam with Davy until the other two can join you. I'm kind of glad the other two are touring this year - the local show here is sold out, so the fans still love them.

R.I.P., Peter.

It made me both happy and sad to see Bruno Ganz be remembered in the "In Memoriam" section of the Oscars last night. Of course, the important thing is that his passing was acknowledged.

Unfortunately the 80's music world has lost another artist - R.I.P., Mark Hollis. He was the lead singer of Talk Talk, most known for the song "It's My Life" (covered by Gwen Stefani much later). There are many links to the bands' videos on this story:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/talk-talk-frontman-mark-hollis-reportedly-dead-64-203704981.html

They were a really good band back in the day. They only had a couple of hits in North America (the aforementioned "It's My Life" and the song "Talk Talk", the latter being a big hit on MTV), but they had many more in their native UK. Again, R.I.P., Mark Hollis.

Absolutely gutted to learn that Keith Flint has died. I saw The Prodigy twice a few years back and those were two absolutely mindblowing shows. Rest in peace you twisted firestarter. 🖤

Can the Grim Reaper please take some time off? At this rate, it's going to end up like 2016 :(

(Hope I haven't just jinxed things by saying that).

52 for him. 49 for Keith. Too young, indeed. And a reminder to live life to the fullest.
