LETTER TO U2

24th September 2019 Tuesday.

My brother has today bought two tickets for us two to go see U2. Bless him from the deepest depths of my soul.

And I have been alternating between giggling like a little child to sobbing with loud howls and moans like a mourning mother ever since I have received the message.

Right now, as I type this, I am crying quietly and smiling at the same time, tears rolling down uncontrollably.

Its the Red zone.. Part of the proceeds are going to Bono’s Red campaign!

Most up front area at the concert. The snobs who don’t know U2 from Coldplay half the time, if they even know it at all, will be at the very back with their food stalls and restrooms and cozy sofas. Excellent.

I will be rocking my crutches on the frontlines.

There’s even a backstage tour as part of the package for that zone. Will the boys be there backstage when we tour it?!! I will see Bono and I will make sure he sees me. Even if only for a second.

I need to keep this short.

So..

U2, all four of U

I have been a devout worshipper of your music and you guys since the age of 14 when the Joshua Tree originally came out and swept the Grammies. I am 46 now. It was very difficult in India in the late Eighties to get hold of Western music. But I did what I could to get up to speed as soon as I could! And have partaken your every work with utter eager hunger.

I have lived your songs through good times in my life and the bad.

Apart from your most awesome music, your ever changing flavours, I admire deeply that you guys have stuck together so long. In spite of the huge success! That is so commendable in itself. No awards for that though. J

I quote your lyrics, Bono, like a priest quotes from the bible. Every time I introduce U2 to a new listener who takes a liking and starts becoming familiar with more than just your biggest hits, I feel like a preacher who has just won a convert and assured his own place in heaven. I have a decent collection of U2 collectibles. Vintage posters ad vinyls and show tickets from shows I haven’t been to. Calendars, mugs, tshirts.. . what not!

I just love you guys from the bottom of my heart for your work and your loyalty and work ethics.

Now I think an introduction is long overdue.

My name is Kuljeet. I have been living in Navi Mumbai since I was three or so. On your way to the venue from Mumbai city, you will cross a creek over a bridge and go through a toll station. I live just across it.

I have been on crutches all my life. But I have crawled up mountains and down the hills to the river sides. I have been places no crutches have seen before.  I have lived a full life and travelled much more than any other person with similar disability that I have ever seen. I have a thousand friends everywhere. And I make a thousand more everywhere I go. Though I don’t go out much these days J

Despite having lost my legs in infancy to polio and my father when I was five to a cardiac arrest, I am mostly a positive person people will tell you. A tad loud and outspoken, but mostly a happy person.

I sing and play a few chords on the guitar and yes, a lot of U2 covers that I love to perform. Still haven’t found, Running to stand still. One, Streets, In God’s Country, So Cruel. Trying to Throw Your Arms to name just a few. Have done a techno version with a techno musician friend of your “Your Blue Room”. And a home acoustic recording of “City of Blinding Lights”. I just cant ever tell you how much I love your music

I returned from a few years living and working in the Middle East about seven years ago. And have been a woodworking artist for the last five or so. I go by the handle ‘aariwala’ on instagram and other places. It means ‘the guy with the saw’.

I am going to make you guys a memento that I hope to gift to you.

I would never be able to put into words what it would mean for me to be able to meet you guys in person. I don’t even know how to have the audacity to ask if I could.

But I will smile constantly till the day I die just on that one memory alone. I promise.

Excuse me for jumping in here;

That's awesome, Have a great show, and may your dreams come true. 'Dream out loud' is the key. I hope you find a way.
