  10. Wouldn't it be fantastic if she did?!? She's amazing. She's earned it. Like U2 she's post-punk without being confined by it: she takes pain and anger and makes intimacy and love. U2, please make it happen!
  11. U2 are planning an arena tour next year, frontman Bono has confirmed. The Dublin rockers are excited about going out on the road to promote new album 'Songs of Innocence' but do not want to play vast outdoor spaces this time around. Bono told Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell: "We're gonna be touring. We're gonna start next year. We're gonna try and play the O2 and places like that, more indoors that outdoors this time, but we'll see where it takes us. "It's exciting. We'll be coming your way and these songs are the songs that, I think... I think they will play themselves." The 54-year-old rocker - who has daughters Jordan, 25, and Memphis, 23, and sons Elijah, 15, and John, 13, with wife Ali - admitted it takes a lot for the group to tour these days and they will only do so if they are truly proud of their new material. He said: "Only if the songs are great can you bear leaving home. We all have families and mates and... so you know, you're looking for 11 great reasons to leave home and I think we've got them. "You know what it's like now, it's like a whole city goes on the road with us. Our kids go out on the road, they get excited about it. It's like... yeah, it's kind of a whole... Dublin goes on the road." From: Irish Examiner

  17. The Cannes Lions Festival is a ‘creative conference’ which brings together heavy hitters in the worlds of advertising and branding. Terry Savage, Chairman of the festival, said, “Bono has used his celebrity status to successfully establish a global brand, through which he has built unique relationships with other such brands, to raise awareness and funds for the fight against AIDS and achieve greater good for humankind.” Accepting his award, the U2 frontman (54) took part in a 45 minute interview with Apple Senior Vice President of Design Jonathan Ive, discussing the impact and success of (RED). Speaking from the stage, Bono urged brands to create “big marketing campaigns” to help (RED) eradicate AIDS and appealed for their help in determining an AIDS free-future. Co-founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006, (RED) is a creative fusion of branding, activism and philanthropy that has generated almost €200 million for the fight against AIDS in Africa. (RED) joins forces with some of the world’s most recognisable brands, such as Coco Cola, Starbucks and Bank of America, which contribute up to 50% of profits from (RED) branded goods and services to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS TB and Malaria for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services Apple is (RED)’s largest corporate contributor; the record-breaking (RED) Design Auction curated by Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson in 2013 raising €10 million alone. Bono remarked to the audience "Apple is so f***ing annoyingly quiet about the fact they've raised $75M for (RED).” Thanks largely to the work of (RED), The Global Fund has been able to support more than 40 million people, offering prevention, treatment, counselling, HIV testing and care services. 19. Bono and the Edge will contribute a handful of songs to Once director John Carney's upcoming film, Sing Street, which takes place in Dublin in the 1980s and tells the story of a teenager who starts a band after switching from private to public school. "[T]hey already have been extremely helpful in discussing the musical aspect of the film and what the sound is going to be like," Carney tells Rolling Stone. "It's going to be set in the Eighties; obviously U2 were extremely prolific then, so they'll bring that, and they’ve just been great sounding boards. Bono has been very helpful with character and story as I've sort of pitched the project to him over the last few months." While Bono has helped Carney flesh out Sing Street's story, the director noted that the singer wasn't exactly pulling from his own experiences of forming U2 while still in high school. Still, Carney praised Bono's knack for story, which he believes comes not just from a love of film, but from his storied music career as well. "I think a lot of musicians know about story, because I think a gig is a story," Carney said. "And I think that an album is a story, and most people that write albums have some sense of a three act structure. So he's been very helpful with how much music he's done, but also I think he watches movies closely. He's been helpful with beginning with a strong opening scene and character development. He's just generally a guy that knows his movies." Carney added that Bono and the Edge won't appear in the movie itself, and while their official role or level of involvement remains to be seen, the director said they will likely serve as some sort of executive musical producers, and pen two or three tracks for the film. U2 certainly know a thing or two about writing for movies too: The band scored their second Oscar nod for Best Original Song last year for "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. 20. Bono will receive the first Cannes LionHeart Award, from Cannes Lions Intenational Festival of Creativity, for his work on (RED). “Bono has used his celebrity status to successfully establish a global brand, through which he has built unique relationships with other such brands, to raise awareness and funds for the fight against AIDS and achieve greater good for humankind,” says Terry Savage, Chairman of Lions Festivals. “We are delighted and privileged that Bono will share his inspirational story with our Cannes Lions delegates and we look forward to presenting him with the first Cannes LionHeart in recognition of his achievements.” Bono will be presented with the Cannes LionHeart on 21 June. Besides, Bono will join Jonathan Ive, Apple designer, in a conversation to discuss the success of (RED) and it’s collaboration with global partners. More info: Cannes Lion

  23. Bono, Edge, Paul Simon and Paul McGuinness have gathered to pay a tribute to Seamus Heaney, the famous poet who died last year. A 16m sq work, titled “Out of the Marvellous”, which was commissioned by Amnesty International and part funded by the rockstars, will hang from the ceiling of Dublin Airport's terminal 2. He was a great supporter of the human rights organization for more than 30 years. Bono said Seamus should be an inspiration to people on their travels. “With my life, I pass through a lot of airports. Seamus' poems are my companion on every journey... they come with me wherever I go. Now, when any of us travel - be it leaving our home, or our visitors returning to their own homes, Seamus will be there to bid us all farewell." Edge also said he was an inspiration to the band. "Seamus Heaney was an inspiration to our band - as well as to politicians, artists, dreamers and all in between, from every corner of the world. I love the idea that the words of this great poet - and Sis' beautiful tapestry - will send travellers from Ireland and beyond safely on their way 'out of the marvellous." This is a photo of the groom's cake my wife surprised me with at our wedding on 10/7/13. The first album I ever bought was The Joshua Tree, back in the summer of 1988 (still my all time favorite album, One Tree Hill's still my all time favorite song). Printed on a sheet of fondant is the setlist of the concert they played in Belgium on The Joshua Tree Tour on my birthday. The cake was made by Patisserie Angelica in Sebastapool, California. I was even more surprised than I was when U2 busted out Electric Co, An Cat Dubh, Gloria & The Ocean on the Vertigo tour!
