Hello Hello....I was at a place called "shadow album"
What an evening, what an experience and WHAT AN ALBUM! I feel very blessed to be one of the few who were able to listen to the Re-Assemble album in its full Dolby Atmos quality and am still on a high!
But step by step:
Universal Germany hostet the event in a special Dolby Atmos Location (Acht Berlin) and sponsored drinks and snacks at the bar for the guests. When entering, the guests got wristbands and had to turn in their smartphones. The small cinema had space for 60 people but not all seats were used, so I estimate that around 40 listeners were present. After a short introduction to the album and its background story by Universal, the pre-recorded audio by Edge was played. Very charming - we all know why we love Edge and his sense of humour.
And then the shadow album was played. Oh boy! I do not want to spoil anything so I will not get into all the details. Just so much: the shadow album feels more like the rock'n'roll album that U2 had announced before releasing the Dismantle album 20 years ago. It is (mostly) dirty, funky, raw and really, really, REALLY good (just my humble opinion). If you cannot tell from my previous sentence: I love the Re-assemble album already after hearing it just once and look forward to its release.
Standout tracks or impressions after last night's first presention are (for me):
"Evidence of Life" that somehow gives me raw and youthful "Boy" vibes and definitely should have been on the Dismantle album.
"Luckiest Man in the World" the song formerly known as "Mercy" - need I say more? Nope
and actually all the rather raw songs like "Treason" and also "All Because of You 2" with its almost Beatle-esque chorus and really cool retro guitar solo
Following the shadow album, three new Dolby Atmos versions of the Dismantle album were also played: "City of Blinding Lights", "Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own" and "Vertigo". In comparison to the previously played shadow album, these familiar songs feel actually a little bit overproduced, a bit too much. Maybe sometimes "less is more" (btw. I do love the rawer live versions of the Dismantle songs a lot more than the studio versions).
After the listening sessions, all guests were allowed to take promotion posters (Thank you, Universal).
So, getting back to my first sentence, I would like to add: Thank you, U2, for sharing this "new/old" shadow album with us! This is a real treat!!
