SPIN magazine has named Achtung Baby the best/most influential album of the past 25 years -- part of SPIN's celebration of its 25th anniversary. Says the magazine:

"Unlike Radiohead with OK Computer and Kid A,U2 took their post-industrial, trad-rock disillusionment not as asymbol of overall cultural malaise, but as a challenge to buck up andtranscend. Their confessions of frailty and blindness amid murkyatmospherics (no doubt egged on by coproducer Brian Eno) had an air ofcleansing rather than whining. That the album trails offintrospectively is brave in its own quiet way."

In order, the rest of SPIN's top five:

2. Sign 'O The Times, Prince

3. The Queen Is Dead, The Smiths

4. Nevermind, Nirvana

5. OK Computer, Radiohead

Only one other U2 album made the list: The Joshua Tree at number 62. U2 also appears in several categories on SPIN's 25th anniversary readers' poll.

actarus']such a delicate way to say that U2 has done nothing good since 1991 or almost ..

i dont think so. more of them saying u2 made the greatest album ever.

???

I seem to recall that Spin wasn't too fond of U2 around that time, e.g., the Zoo Tours, though I honestly can't say that I recall their original review of Achtung Baby itself.  Anyone got a little time to kill, want to go dig it up?  (I've got to get to bed in a few minutes!) Spin tried to gin up some drama around U2, running a big cover story about "the story that U2 tried to kill" (or words to that effect), when all that U2 did was....decline to do an interview with Spin.  This after the band's PR crew found out that Kim Deal's fiance, who was given a whole lotta backstage access,  was a writer for Spin, but hadn't disclosed that fact. Of course, he didn't bother to mention to his readers that he was engaged to Kim Deal, either, so not a lot of full disclosure going on. (And I don't think Deal ever married the guy, but I'm not a Pixies expert.)

I think all of Spin's back issues are now online - somebody go find the stuff and repost it here, while I'm off in lullabyland.

By the way, the local music writer for the San Francisco Chronicle completely dismissed Achtung Baby at first - but did an about-face and named it as one of his Top 10 albums for 1992...this, of course, after U2 blew up even bigger than they had been back in 1987.  Funny how selling out the Oakland Arena in, like, 5 minutes makes your sucky album sound so much better! tongue.gif

Zzzzzzzz.......
