Celebrating U2′s Achtung Baby Album

Posted on November 1, 2011 by Jimmy

The calendar has turned from October to November, and that means we're turning our attention from U2's October album -- which had its 30th anniversary last month -- to U2's Achtung Baby album, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. Our celebration begins with an Achtung Baby-themed design on our website. We've changed the band photo in the upper right to one from the early 1990s, changed the font of our logo, and the color scheme reflects the mostly dark artwork from Achtung Baby. If you're not seeing the new look, clear your web browser's cache and hit refresh.

As we go through the month, look for special articles, features and interviews about Achtung Baby ... along with our regular coverage of the daily U2 news that you've come to expect. We're starting the celebration with a new poll question; look to the right of our home page to vote for your favorite song from Achtung Baby!

October Forum Review

Posted on October 31, 2011 by Jimmy

As we wrap up our month of paying homage to the band's second album, there's been plenty of other material discussed on the forum. Before I get to that, you can check out the October thread to keep the spirit of the celebration going. Here's a brief glimpse of what else has been going on.

When Bono said in a magazine interview that he doesn't see the band's music having any future, it triggered a firestorm of discussion as to what he meant and what it might mean for the future of the band. Another topic that has been popular, and this time in a mostly positive way, is the renewal gift that U2.com is offering people to retain them as members. Finally, I'll point you towards a discussion of the documentary From The Sky Down that aired on BBC1 this month.

With budgets getting tight around the upcoming holiday season, there is no better value than free. Enhance your enjoyment of this site by joining the forum and offering your thoughts on any aspect of the band or something totally different. You'll find engaging conversation in a family-friendly atmosphere and best of all, it's free. We hope to see you there soon.

50 Things to Love About Larry Mullen Jr. on His 50th Birthday

Posted on October 31, 2011 by Jimmy

He holds the distinction of being the youngest member of U2, while also being the founder. He is known as the tough, strong, stoic one -- the badass of the band, if you will. He's Larry Mullen Jr., and though you wouldn't know it from looking at him, he turns 50 years old today.

While compiling this list in tribute to him, I attempted to capture the essence of all the things we love about Larry: his sarcastic sense of humor; his impeccable drumming skills; his versatile talents; his humanitarian efforts; his handsome appearance; his spot-on instinct and his intelligence.

Bono jokingly compares him to The Picture of Dorian Gray, but really -- he has a point. Larry is timeless in every sense of the word -- his looks, his ambition, his demeanor, his drive -- he's the rare type of man who could conceivably conquer any era.

We're proud to celebrate this music man's milestone with 50 Things to Love About Larry on his 50th Birthday.
