What is a cigar room?  Where you go and smoke your brains out?

Billionaire rapper Jay-Z's new book Decoded  hits shelves in Australia, coinciding with his performance at U2's concert in Melbourne today. Random House Australia says the book provides "unparalleled" insight to the relationship between Beyonce's husband and the supergroup frontman Bono.

The two were first introduced in a cigar room in London. Jay-Z and U2's Bono collaborated for their benefit song "Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)" as part of the "Hope for Haiti Now." Now they are teaming up again as Jay-Z supports U2 in the Australian leg of their '360 Degrees' world tour.

In Decoded, JAY-Z talks about his first encounter with Bono and the friendship they developed.

"Bono's got such a pure soul and positive energy - his eyes almost literally light up and dance when he's excited," writes the richest rapper in American entertainment industry.

In his highly personal narrative, JAY-Z discloses what it was like meeting Bono for the first time and what he said to make Bono go back into the studio to rework an already finished album.

"One night I ran into him [bono] and he told me he'd read an interview I'd done somewhere. The writer had asked me about the U2 record that was about to be released and I said something about the kind of pressure a group like that must be under just to meet their own standard," Jay-Z tells the readers.

"Bono told me that my quote had really gotten to him. In fact, he said it got him a little anxious. He decided to go back to the studio even though the album was already done and keep reworking it till he thought it was as good as it could be."

Jay-Z had performed at U2's concert in Auckland, New Zealand. He then flew in to Melbourne over the weekend with his wife Beyonce Knowles and rapper Kanye West, with whom he is working on a collaborative project. The supergroup U2 will play at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne today.

Agreed - shades off, lol, but I've read that he has some sort of condition (or the need to hide the bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep or too much drink from time to time too, ha, ha, ha). I am also struck by how after all these years and all these albums, he still feels such pressure to offer us his best work and keeps second-guessing, wish he could just leave it alone somewhat, lol as it doesn't always have to be so polished, you know?

Yes, when you tinker with something too much, that's not always a good thing.  I think there's always been some insecurity there when it comes to song writing.

He wears the shades cause his eyes are sensitive to light.  He has said if a camera flashes in his eyes, he'll see the flash the rest of the day (I can relate) and his right eye swells up.  This isn't that uncommon with blue eyed people.  I have blue eyes and as I've gotten older they've become more sensitive to light, especially sunlight and fluorescent lights, they give me a headache.

He's also said the shades are part vanity and privacy, which I don't get cause those shades of his are so well known and give him away bono_happy.gif

Yeah, I've heard about his eyes being very sensitive and I believe he has some alergie or something that affects his nasal passages and makes his eyes look red (you know, like when you cry, not the actual color of course), I believe that was mentioned in U2 By U2, and that it also caused his vocal problems early this decade and late the last, but he has medication for it. I think the vocal problems were also related to the smoking... I hear he likes how it makes his voice sound. I could be misinformed, however. I have a problem with bright light and flashes too, being that I have blue eyes as well, I always wear sunglasses outside, even if it is cloudy. On the whole, I agree, love the shades, but I like to see those nice blue eyes.

I personally like how my sunglasses hide the crow's feet roll.gif
