WikiLeaks reveals cable identifying 'sensitive sites'

By Mary Beth Sheridan

U.S. officials expressed outrage Monday after WikiLeaks released a State Department cable that listed sites around the world whose "loss" could "critically impact" the health, communications, economy or security of the United States.

The cable, from February 2009, was part of an effort to compile an international list of infrastructure sites for the Department of Homeland Security, which maintains a similar database of domestic sites it seeks to protect from terrorist attack.

The State Department cable listed many obvious sites -- various countries' dams, bridges, mines, underwater communication cables and oil pipelines. But it also identified specific factories that are key producers of vaccines and weapons parts.

"This is really irresponsible. It is tantamount to giving a group like al-Qaeda a targeting list," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley.

And he has threatened to release the encryption key for even more sensitive information, which he has already released to the web, should he be arrested.

This is hostage taking, plain and simple.  Any credibility his argument might have had that he is trying to facilitate government transparency, is completely undermined by this threat.

His intentions and sentiments are clear.

right im being really stupid can someone explain this one to me slowly

You are not being stupid.  This is a complicated situation on the surface, and the whole affair has morphed terribly from where it started out (and what the group's professed intentions were originally) to where this Anssange guy has finally taken it.

I would be happy to explain, and add supporting information, when I get home again.

It's no worse than the news media outlying all the plans and locations of military and the plans in the event of attacks on global news where anyone can watch it.

At least Assange is being honest about doing that. He's a real life Bond villian.
