The poor breaking bread that’s made out of stone

The rich man won’t eat, he’s eating, alone

That’s easy

But I can’t change the world

In me.

I don't get this lyric !!!!

I don't either :P

But as for the "bread made out of stone", I guess it's a play on this: http://www.virtuousbread.com/bread-and-conversation/what-is-stone-ground-flour/

"The rich man won't eat, he's eating, alone" reminds me of a poem by Baudelaire The Midnight Examination of Conscience (L'Examen de minuit) where you can read:

Finally we have, to drown

Vertigo in delirium,

We, the proud priest of the Lyre,

Whose glory is to show

The rapture of sorrowful things,

Drunk without thirst, eaten without hunger!

I don't get this lyric !!!!

I think it's "the rich man WILL eat" I think

to understand you have to go back to the previous bit that says

"I can change the world"

basically he is saying that he can change the world, the rich and poor references being to the inequality he tackles as an activist, but that he cannot change the world in himself, what makes him him.

As lharper said it actually goes back to rejoice where he says "I can't change the world but I can change the world in me", he is basically saying now that he is wiser he realises that you can affect some external issues but cannot change who you are, your spirit (we know how Bono feel's about the human spirit :) )

That's how I always think of it

That's my interpretation anyway

I have a suggestion--I think what he tries to convey is that it's easy to change the world eg. end poverty, end hunger in the external world, but it's difficult if not impossible to change your mind, your ideas, your way of thinking, in other words, it's difficult to repent (the original meaning of this word is precisely "change your way of thinking")

It' essential to have in mind that HE CAn change the world outside now that he has influence and he's a big rock star....But for the regular people it's not that easy to be heard and change the world outside (when he was not a big rock star back in the rejoice times)....But back then it was easier to change his personality....I.e. the world in him...
