Bono was reportedly giving away R.E.M records at his wife’s birthday.

The 50-year-old U2 frontman was celebrating his wife Ali Hewson’s 50th birthday on Saturday night, and took the opportunity to promote his friend Michael Stipe’s band R.E.M. at the celebration.

The couple were joined by 20 guests, including Michael, Bono’s bandmate The Edge and model Helena Christensen.

According to sources, Bono took to the streets outside of posh eatery Osteria Morini in New York after the group’s meal to see if he could give away some records for his musician friend.

"He was asking people loitering outside if they wanted a CD. Bono was largely ignored, with some looking at him like he was a crazy person until one girl recognized him and snapped up the disc,†a source told the New York Post.

Bono married Ali in August of 1982 after their relationship blossomed in 1975. The couple have four children: daughters Jordan and Memphis Eve, and sons Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi and John Abraham.

I am pretty certain Bono must have been testing the premise--or rather proving the point--that the album as a medium is dead and that the music industry is, indeed, undergoing a radical transformation under the weight of the digital age.

One can easily imagine him sitting there with Stipes drinking and complaining--angsting even--over the state of the industry, before flamboyantly leaping up with the emphatic challenge, "I bet I can't even GIVE a CD away!"  And off into the street he went....

Or maybe he was trying to convince Stipes to wake up....what is he doing printing CDs anyway????

This story elicits a certain amount of amused but genuine sympathy. laugh.gif

It may be Bono's way of showing the physical media is heading for the big smoke, as being discussed elsewhere on the boards.............................................

PS: The title was part joke to try and inspire some banter, hasn't work though!
