Reworked Spider-Man musical pulls in crowds

Broadway's troubled Spider-Man musical has performed well since reopening in a reworked version after a three-week break, box office figures have shown.

According to data released on Monday, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has played at 95% capacity since reopening its doors on Thursday.

The latest version of the show will have its official opening on 14 June.

The show has been dogged by accidents and technical hitches since it first began previewing in November.

The overhaul followed the departure of Julie Taymor, the musical's original director, in March.

The version now running at New York's Foxwoods Theater includes new songs from the show's composers, U2 members Bono and the Edge, and is said to have more humour.

"This is almost a brand-new show," said producer Michael Cohl last week.

Among the cast is Christopher Tierney, who has returned to the production following a serious on-stage accident in December.

The actor suffered a fractured skull, a fractured shoulder blade, four broken ribs and three broken vertebrae after falling 30ft.

Bono + Edge + Spidey = American Idol Finale?

Posted: May 20, 2011

By: Sherry Lawrence

Several news outlets are reporting that Bono and Edge are negotiating with FOX to appear with members of the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark cast on the two-hour American Idol finale on Wednesday, May 25. If this were to happen, it would be the fifth consecutive year members of U2 have collaborated with American Idol. In 2007, the top six finalists sang "American Prayer" during Idol Gives Back. In 2008, Idol winner David Cook sang “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For†during the finals. In 2009, Idol runner-up Adam Lambert sang “One†during the semi-finals. In 2010, winner Lee DeWyze sang “Beautiful Day," which was also his first official release.

Candid Thoughts on Spider-Man From Bono and Edge

Posted: May 20, 2011

By: Sherry Lawrence

Bono stated that he and Edge did not feel fully responsible for the problems of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark due to their long absences from the production during tonight's Nightline program on ABC. "We were in many ways guests of the last production. We were there at the very beginning creating the canvas and the words and the music, but when it came to the production, other people were in charge. So, no, we don’t think we had full responsibility. We are your humble composers with 25 quid invested and five years of our life,†Bono told reporter Cynthia McFadden.

Bono didn't mince words about what went wrong. He said, "Julie would not accept this but she got very close to it. So close that perhaps she couldn't see it. We were going out and coming back and we could see very clearly what we thought were the problems and she didn't think they were as big a problem as we did. Sometimes at a point like that you just have to say 'Look you are too close, we're eating up more and more time and other people's money and we've actually got to stop now and fix this.'"

In describing the differences with the original production and the revamped musical, Bono said, "It was beautiful actually in so many ways. It just didn't cohere. This time, you have a really clear storyline, you have characters you're getting to know, the music is in the system where it's legible. There's lots of really obvious stuff that has been fixed."

Bono states in the interview that he and Edge agreed with the negative reviews from the media critics. "Sort of stuff we were saying backstage. Might have been hard for some other people around here to take that, but we don't disagree with The New York Times." Bono said.

When asked if the new production was fixed, Edge said "It is on the way to being fixed is what we would say. The important things have been fixed, and now it’s the details.†Bono gave a bit more of a mathematic answer: “80 percent. And the last 20 percent will come in the weeks ahead. It will be ready for opening night, I’m sure of that.â€

Watched interview with Bono and Edge last night about reworked Spiderman. The reporter who interviewed them said when she saw the new Spidey it received a standing ovation at the end. She also talked to Chris Tierney and he was very psyched to be back and performing. Glad it's coming together finally, especially for the actors and everyone else who've worked so hard on this.
