Legendary comedienne, business woman, and reality personality Joan Rivers passed away this Thursday, 4 September, at age 81.She has been in the hospital since last Thursday, after going into cardiac and respiratory arrest during a vocal chord procedure at a clinic in NY. She was at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, NY.

Joan's daughter Melissa Rivers released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”

Love her or love-to-hate her, Joan was a brilliant woman. She made a lot of people laugh, including me. During my first college spring break I saw her in Atlantic City with my family. It was the best night of my life after seeing U2 live. I was supposed to see her again in November. She will be missed.

Thanks for making so many of us here on earth laugh, Joan, God bless you. Rest in Peace my dear friend.

Whether you liked her or loathed her she was unique and so memorable as a true individual, she left her mark. Personally I enjoyed her humour and irreverence, it was uplifting and such a giggle.

I will miss her 'noise' ( I mean that in a nice way).

She had her own humour about what would happen when she died, that with all the surgery she'd had she wouldn't bio-degrade!! I hope she makes a lot of noise wherever she has gone...Rest in Noise?!
