A Comprehensive U2 Playlist For Your Enjoyment (2016 Update)

If you just want to have a look at the playlist below,
then feel free to skip my overlong disclaimer!

I tend to create playlists quite a lot in my spare time.

Part of it is just natural to me with all the technology available to want to jump in and mess around with track orders,
make playlists that fit certain moods, or whatever...
Part of it is being single in the Midwest of the United States with apparently quite a lot of free time!

In this case, Larry's remark in the film Rattle & Hum about it being "a musical journey" informs the making of this one and describes it quite well, I think.
Originally, I wanted to make a nice thirty or so song list that summed up my idea of a U2 Best Of compilation.
However, as I suspected would be the case, I'd always end up thinking that there are more songs that need to be included.

Inevitably perhaps, I found myself shooting for including every released studio track the group has done.
I suspect that as soon as I am happy with this playlist,
U2 will release the Songs of Experience LP and I'll have to rethink the whole 200 plus song set I have created!

I don't mind though.
It's a labor of love and appreciation.

I have made these segments/lists no longer than a CD's length each.
That way it isn't just a massive list of songs.
I wanted all the B-sides, soundtrack material, side projects, certain remixes, (most) work done with other artists, and a few oddities to be included.
As a result, there has been a wide array of material to choose from, many moods to explore, and many rhythms to cross.

I'm aiming to be comprehensive though I'm not quite there yet.
This playlist is NOT complete.
Certain tracks like
Van Diemen's Land and Flower Child,
Winter and Wild Honey,
Levitate and Plot 180,
Stand Up Comedy and many others still need a home in there somewhere...
I welcome ideas as to where these and others would fit best...

You will notice that I have used some of U2's live song ordering tendencies.
It's not a matter of not being original.
It's more to do with not messing with an inspired transition.
Until The End Of The World straight into New Year's Day is a prime example.
That one gives me chills every time, especially live.
The same goes for Bullet The Blue Sky followed by Running To Stand Still.

While there are quite a few hits up front in the mix,
my intention was to spread things out a bit.
For instance, With Or Without You doesn't arrive until near the end.

The main thing is that I like transitions from song to song to make sense.
It always bugged me when DJ playlists on radio would just stomp on a mood with the introduction of a song that had no business being there...
In God's Country into A Sort Of Homecoming felt really nice to me.
The same goes for Moment Of Surrender being followed by The Troubles, Your Blue Room, and If You Wear That Velvet Dress.
Sleep Like A Baby straight into Babyface feels spooky to me somehow.
It shouldn't work but it does.

Anyway, that's quite enough of my happy blabbing.
I hope that you like the look of it and perhaps use the song order for your enjoyment.
Perhaps you could make one of your own that puts my playlist to shame.
Well, what's the hold up?
Are you gonna wait forever?
Bring it!

Quite a lot of thought put into that, it looks like. I think I would put Levitate in the first group of songs.

Thank you for your kind reply!

I have been in such a heavy Bowie mode of late that the U2 music I love has been temporarily put to one side.

I knew I wanted to bump this topic a bit though.

As you mentioned,

I definitely have put a lot of time into this playlist.

It has a feel that traverses many moods and themes.

Adding the remaining songs will be done,

it's just a delicate process for me.

When Songs Of Experience drops,

it's going to send me into a flurry of activity just trying to work them all in!

My guess is that Levitate will appear somewhere later in the playlist.

The opening thirty or so songs of this anthology tend to fall into the hits side of the U2 catalogue.

Levitate could end up anywhere, of course.

I just tend to think it'll be somewhere later in the mix.

Again, thank you for your remark!

Very nice work  :)

¿Is there a place were we can hear the play list?

thank you for asking!

I have not posted these songs anywhere.

I have it on my iTunes...

I wish I had it posted for you.

In fact,

I have never posted music in that way.

if you do not mind taking some time to put it together,

it is quite worth the time and effort!

If you ever have a U2 Day planned,

it is a fine way to enjoy the sheer variety of material in their canon.

if you let me know how I could post it for everyone,

I will make an effort to do so!

Thank you very much for your reply!

You, or anyone really, could put together a playlist on Youtube or Spotify and share the link on here, I believe.  I'll try to play around with it this afternoon and see what I can find.

I just tried it on Youtube. Really easy, just sign in, click "add to" and create a playlist. Here's the first playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_B14ZO5yhkdVBt-zZtKjU19M0bd1jdOS

Ok, great!

I'm at work on a brief break so I haven't sampled your post yet,

but thanks very much!

I guess I was always a bit nervous about ever posting audio not belonging to me,

so I never learned/explored ways of doing so.

However, if this is an okay way of posting playlists,

I'm very happy to share.

Actually, I always looked at this sort of thing as being no different than radio;

a free sampling service.

That is why I don't understand how artists would be against certain kinds of dissemination.

YouTube doesn't have paid independent promoters who eat up record company budgets.

It's almost entirely fan-fueled.

Enough of that though...

Rant over!

Again, cheers.
