Radioactive elements from Chernobyl have been detected in mushrooms in the south of Germany.

Mushrooms, more than any other vegetable, concentrate radioactivity because their thread-like root systems spread over a large area for several meters on the surface around the plant.

Today on United Nations  International Day of the Girl Child, we at CCI stand with the global community to support girls’ progression everywhere.

“We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” (Malala Yousafzai)

CCI's programme development is extremely conscious of the hurdles that face many girls, even in today's modern world. We believe girls have the right to a safe, educated and healthy life.

Never underestimate the power of empowered girls. #dayofthegirl #girlsbelonghere

Today is World Mental Health Day as recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO)  and the United Nations. It is a day to educate and raise awareness of mental illness and its major effects on people’s lives worldwide.  The theme for this year is ‘Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality’.

Mental health issues have become one of Chernobyl’s biggest legacies. Many of those who were relocated after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident now suffer from anxiety, depression and disrupted social networks - the traumas of displaced people everywhere.

These conditions have health effects as real as those caused by radiation. The stress, depression and fear over the ongoing effects of the fallout have translated to negative conditions, especially for children’s health.

This day of observation, now more than ever, is crucial, as it encourages us to open up about mental health issues and tackle the stigma, isolation and discrimination that continues to plague people with mental health conditions and their families.

On this #WorldFoodDay, we're reminded of all of those who are working to fight food insecurity globally. Abieda Charles is one of those people. As the project manager at Bo-Kaap Community Garden in Cape Town, she and a number of other organizations are fostering the next generation of farmers and teaching others how to provide for themselves.

"We see the power of togetherness and community when we harvest the goodness we have grown," Abieda says.

Here's a closer look at their work. https://go.one.org/3DHoWUj

Today is #GlobalHandwashingDay2021 and we know that washing our hands is essential to fight #COVID19, but that's only part of the solution.

"We have to move together or else it’s never going to work," Tom Hart, ONE's acting CEO, shared at BergamoScienza. Ending the pandemic requires a coordinated global response.

Join us in demanding that leaders come together to #VaccinateTheWorld by 2022 and finally end the pandemic. https://go.one.org/3CBkjL5
