I was forced to do French at high school, which I considered to be useless... Still do haha! Probably because I have no desire to go to France.

45, 625 - Yeah, I suppose enjoyment of language learning does depend if you think you're going to use the language(s) or not. I regularly come into contact with Spanish, so it's useful for me, whereas I use French much less often, but can still remember a few basics.

Pretty much the only thing I can remember in German is the crucial phrase for being able to tell someone that I need the toilet

45, 624 Yeah, they get a lot more choice, but start younger. A fair few of my Chinese friends get jobs teaching Chinese in Primary or Secondary schools

45626 As you know Belgium is a country with Dutch and French speaking people (and a few thousands whose language is German). Both

national languages are taught in the two communities. My language is Dutch (Nederlands), not French by the way.

45 628 Hope the fence survived, Friday counting!

45, 629 - Our fence is still in one piece. And we didn't have any stray washing blowing into the garden either

(In a previous storm, a year or two ago, some of our neighbours' washing ended up stranded on our fence - and in one case, a T-shirt got tangled up in a thorny bush, which can't have done it much good).

45, 616 - Counting and giggling at the fact that yesterday's lesson in my Latin book included learning how to talk about counting :D

Ego numero - I count, I am counting.

Numeramus - We count, we are counting.

Not to be confused with Spanish where "numero" means number. And now I want to know why a form of the Latin verb evolved into a noun in Spanish (and maybe also in Italian?).

I'm going to go and have some lunch and ponder all this geekery.

Well, the U2 community is so diverse that there is often someone here who can answer a wide array of questions. My academic training can help with your query here (I have a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Classics).

The Spanish noun “numero” doesn’t directly come from the Latin verb “numero”; it instead comes from the related noun “numerus”. The Romance languages (especially Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese) have their singular nouns end in vowels (usually ‘o’ or ‘a’, but sometimes ‘e’ and ‘i’ too) - they usually resemble the ablative case of Latin nouns. (Thus, the joke about Italian essentially being Latin in the ablative case, since so many words end in vowels.)

If you have any other questions about your foray into Latin, please feel free to ask.

45, 634 - Night-time counting.

And I'm updating my booklist ready for when the libraries and bookshops reopen next month  :D As much as it's nice to be able to order online, there's nothing like being able to browse the books in person. Especially when a book you *didn't* know about jumps out at you and shouts at you to read it.
