Subscriber JCF Posted September 22, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted September 22, 2018 Got my vinyl, too! My husband's is on the way. Now to just find a friend with a record player....I agree it's a bit of a bummer for them to be producing records and shipping them to so many people who will not play them. Whatever. I was one of the lucky few whose fan club membership worked out and got me pre-sale tickets. Worth it!!

I was one of the lucky few whose fan club membership worked out and got me pre-sale tickets. Worth it!! Oh, the pre-sale aspect of the site membership has always worked well for me too - the only time I have ever had a problem there was when the bot attack on the first leg of the Vertigo tour happened - I was one of the victims of it. So, I felt blessed even to get my upper-level for that first Vertigo show. (And I was tremendously impressed that Larry apologized at The Grammys that year for it - he didn’t need to do that. The scammer who gummed up the pre-sale should have apologized and then some.) For the pre-sales alone I would most probably always renew here. I started posting at length (and often) about the annual gift (that our membership dues actually pay for) starting the summer of last year - first out of annoyance, then out of confusion. It simply isn’t beyond the means of LiveNation to provide both vinyl to those who want vinyl and CDs (and/or higher-quality downloads) for those who want CDs. It would be a piece of cake for them to do - all they have to do is want to satisfy the preferences of everyone here. Making a vinyl copy for everyone and then shipping it to everyone, whether is it wanted or not, is doubly a waste of both money and resources for them. In addition, the reason the JT singles last year took so long to get out all of us is that there was (and perhaps still is) an enormous backlog for the production of vinyl - there’s more demand than current production levels can satisfy. I think that’s at least part of the reason that this year’s gift was sent so quickly, i.e., to make up for last year’s fiasco. If the club here were given a mini-poll when we all renew our memberships (and when new members were joining for the first time) asking which medium we would prefer if the annual gift is music in any given year, everyone’s desires would be satisfied and the site would save money. Everybody wins. We all pay the same dues every year; we ought to have the right to be equally happy with the gifts. Beyond the gifts, I’m very happy with the site too. I just wish the gifts could be an equally good source of satisfaction too because they used to be until very recently. The problem can be fixed very easily too. I hope in years going forward it will be.

It’s nice they give a gift, but I don’t have a record player and don’t plan on getting one. If they had just offered free downloads then more people would be thrilled to receive the subscription gift. Cool covers on the records though!... and I don’t even know anyone who has a record player!! -sorry I have one ? Vinyls are trend now ? https://thevinylfactory.com/news/record-vinyl-sales-usa-first-half-2018/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/03/23/cds-vinyl-are-outselling-digital-downloads-for-the-first-time-since-2011/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4d2c638690f5 I hadn't receive mine yet. I read that shipping is in the United States West Coast and I have my PoBox in the East Coast, which it's more fast than waiting the shipping to Colombia. Subscriber Ender Posted September 24, 2018 Subscriber Share Posted September 24, 2018 You know, I'm a big vinyl head. I prefer vinyl to everything else. And this is because I am a bit old school in that I like the idea of listening to music as being an active experience - HAVING to get up and turn the vinyl over, looking through the sleeve or booklet etc... For me music has ALWAYS been about the entire package, not just the song. So, for me, vinyl is the perfect annual gift (though... this year's and last year's I thought were kind of lame). That being said, I'm not like everyone else. And I respect that. I 100% agree that U2.com/Fanfire (or whoever) would save a bunch of money if they would ask which each subscriber would prefer when they acknowledge the gift for the year. Sure, some people who don't have a turntable may still ask for the vinyl because it's a cool collector's item, but by and large I think most people who don't have one aren't going to want one. Personally, I was thinking, if the purpose is to have a collector's item, why not also give the option of a CD that's designed the same way etc? That way non-vinyl folks can get something they can hold in their hands, that's tangible. That would at the very least make a collection of songs like the one they gave this year (three songs that, quite frankly, if you're invested enough in U2 to be a paying member, you likely have already) something that's unique - that no one else has. CDs are WAY cheaper to do, still make a useful collector's item, and you can still get the digital off the site (or rip the CD). Anyway... that's my two cents. I personally love that vinyl is so in right now. I have nearly collected all of U2's work in vinyl (the reissues... POP and Zooropa make me so happy and I'm dying for Passengers to get released - what a perfect sit-and-listen), I have all the Killers, most of Smashing Pumpkins, and I'm on the home stretch of Oasis - just to name a few. At the same time, it's not for everyone. And that's okay! I think it would be smart for U2.com to acknowledge that. Why NOT make your paying fans happy when it's something so easy to do? As for the gift itself...? I'm still a bit perplexed why, with all of the recording of EVERYTHING that U2 does, why don't we have more rarities or outtakes or demos or what-have-you sitting on our shelves? 2 2
