Here we go again... 😀 7 hours ago, Max Tsukino said: expected when there's a gift announcement...¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I have to push back these comments a bit. Complaints here are not unjustified simply because they are made. Every member has paid their dues to express their opinions here on Zootopia on all things U2. Yes, there are opinions on here sometimes that seem strange, but even the ones that may seem strange certainly have the right to exist if the original poster has offered them sincerely. (I've lost count of the number of posts here that confused me, made me laugh, etc.; message boards are message boards - I addressed those posts by clicking somewhere else.) Basically, our current mini-drama over this release is in the original description - what exactly is meant by "CD" in the original description? As I pointed out in my last post, does "CD" mean "full show on CD instead of vinyl" or does it mean just a single CD? The original Apollo show was a full concert. That's a legitimate issue to seek clarification about. Thus, I sincerely hope that 2 CDs are coming, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting (and expressing) such an outcome. Well, I hope we get more news soon, hopefully welcome news. Edited December 29, 2020 by dmway
Subscriber CorkVegan Posted December 29, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted December 29, 2020 To be honest I always assumed that the Apollo release would be incomplete and edited. That seems to be the norm for U2 nowadays. (Look at the NYC show on JT30 deluxe and Chicago on ATYCLB deluxe). We are getting previous unreleased live material which hands down beats the thirty year old remixes we've gotten in recent years. Obviously the full show would be ideal but that seems unlikely.

A cd fits 80 minutes on it. The Apollo was a good bit shorter than the E&I shows. They would only need to omit 1 or 2 songs at most from the Setlist. As I said if gaps which are basically just crowd noise is edited out then the whole performance minus Red Flag Day would fit on 1 disc. If they took out 2 songs they wouldn’t need to edit other bits out but it seems pointless to keep long pauses with only crowd noise bits in. Thank you for posting this. I went back to research more info about the show, and you're right - it wasn't as long as normal e&i shows (I corrected my original post to reflect the more accurate info). To have the whole Apollo show without edits, 2 CDs would indeed be needed. At first, I wasn't sure why you were nominating "Red Flag Day" for exclusion; however, I then found out that the show as broadcast by SiriusXM excluded that song. Thus, U2 may be using the SiriusXM broadcast version as the source for a single CD. (I guess U2 wasn't happy with that version of RFD? I wonder why they excluded that song as opposed to a different song.) Well, I still would hope for a full show; however, if cutting one song makes it a single CD, that may be what they choose. (FWIW, I would rather they spread the whole show over two discs and added a bonus track or two on the second disc - that would be a genuine treat for the U2.com community and a substantive improvement over getting the same show from "alternative" sources.) Thanks again. Maybe the downloads will include the omitted song/songs, if they go with a single CD. Of course, now I need to squeeze in my customary plea for WAV downloads and not merely mp3s only. 😎

You pointed out one of my pet peeves with the band in general, i.e., their persistent and seemingly unrepentant urge to edit their own live recordings. This is not just true for them nowadays; it has been one of their core operating principles all the way back to UABRS. (BTW, I think you meant to say Boston, and not Chicago, for the ATYCLB deluxe - if your set has the Chicago "Elevation" tour show instead of the Boston show, you have an especially collectible version.) Back when VHS tapes roamed the Earth, they didn't release a full show without a missing song or two until POPMart. When DVDs took over, their first full show was the Chicago Vertigo show...and they went right back to editing again for the U2360 DVD/BluRay. Fortunately, they have behaved for the i&e and e&i shows. Well, as I said above, if there are songs missing from the CD, perhaps there will be WAV versions of any missing songs as downloads. One hopes...

Subscriber yardie Posted December 29, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted December 29, 2020 Oh, that's a stunning gift for 2021 - that was the band at their purest & best in the modern day world of technology. To anyone that was there - you have a lifetime memory to cherish. Happy New Year.
Subscriber mgiv78 Posted December 30, 2020 Subscriber Share Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) LOVE this! Can we bring back the vinyl versions of these gifts though? DVDs/CDs are insignificant forms of media nowadays, but vinyl's legacy lives on. Listening to Live from Boston on vinyl right now - it's glorious! Well, there are plenty of people, both here and in general, who still enjoy CDs and DVDs. Your personally finding them “insignificant” doesn’t make such a belief an objective fact. (Also, I don’t quite understand why you are using your love of vinyl to impugn DVDs, since vinyl doesn’t have a visual component.) However, I have often wondered why audio gifts aren’t offered in multiple physical formats. If a choice were offered in advance (for example, at the time of one’s membership renewal) for what format one prefers if a gift in any given year is an audio one, more subscribers’ wishes could be satisfied. You also wouldn’t get mass mailings of CDs to those who would prefer vinyl, or of vinyl to those who prefer CDs (the latter especially being a large (and avoidable) waste of resources, both in cost of materials and in postage - it’s much more expensive to mail vinyl than CDs, and doubly a waste for those who have no interest in vinyl). On the whole, the site has been good in alternating formats from year to year. I still hope for a day that one’s preferences for formats will be satisfied in a more targeted way...maybe someday... 🤷♂️
