In honor of Greg Carroll: "One Tree Hill" @ the One Tree Hill

Recommended Posts

On November 8 the Joshua Tree Tour 2019 will start in a city which was significant to the history and the spirit of the album "The Joshua Tree" - because of the song "One Tree Hill" which reflects hope in the moment of a deep loss and because of the dedication of the whole album to Greg Carroll. I guess, there is no better place for U2 to open this 2019-tour as it is in Auckland. Greg Carroll, whom probably none of us have known personally, lives on in this album through the song "One Tree Hill" and gives the album a lot of the spirit, for which we are so grateful as fans. And for me - as for many others, I think - the One Tree Hill in Auckland is a kind of place of longing and a symbol, as is the song of the same name.

So, here's my idea: What would you say that we come together and "pre-open" the tour ourselves by visiting the One Tree Hill on the evening before the first show and honor Greg Carroll by singing "his" song? I think, that would be a great and unique experience. It would take us nearer to this man who was so significant to this album, and it would let us breath the spirit of "The Joshua Tree". Maybe we could also find someone who plays guitar, so that we have a good accompaniment. Maybe you like the idea? Just say what you think about it!

I would love to do this. I will be arriving from Los Angeles on the 7th in the morning (I am going to both shows). I am not sure how far One Tree Hill is from Auckland but let me know. Blessings, Penelope

Hey Penelope! Great! :)One Tree Hill is located right in the city of Auckland, in Cornwall Park. The park is open til 8pm, so maybe 7pm would be a good time. What do you think? ... I hope that we can find some more people who would join. But I guess, there is one more big problem that could cause the whole thing to burst... Take a look at the "Cornwall Park conditions of entry" (item 20). They are very strict about meetings. Unfortunately, I only saw this now! Maybe you have an idea?

Ahh! I think, the problem isn´t really a problem! If we are just a small group coming together outside the park and then visiting together the One Tree Hill, then our "meeting" wouldn't have the character of a "public meeting"... We would just be a small group of people who visit the One Tree Hill. So I think that can be a solution!

The rules for visiting Cornwall Park are just so strict because it is a special place for the Maori and New Zealanders... It is to be understood that they don't want to have any big public meetings there.

Hey Manuel! Yay! We will do it!

Okay, The feedback is now increasing. I've posted our event in the facebook-group for the Auckland concerts:

https://www.facebook.com/events/545755652908793/

We will meet at the Main Gate of Cornwall Park (Greenlane West Rd) on Thursday, 7 November, 5 pm.

From there we can walk through the park and up to One Tree Hill, where we will arrive at about 5:45 pm, I think.

Everyone is welcome to join us! So to all: If you'd like to breath the spirit of "The Joshua Tree" together with other like-minded people and to take a walk through this nice park up to One Tree Hill, you're welcome! If you like to join, please leave a message here in the forum or in facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/545755652908793/). Due to the conditions of "Cornwall Park" we will have to limit the number of participants.

After visiting One Tree Hill we can go to Doolan Brothers Bar and Eatery, an Irish pub in Ellerslie, where U2 music will be played that evening. From top of One Tree Hill it`s a way of about 30 minutes.

If we still want to sing, I guess, we'd need someone on guitar! It may be a crazy idea, but let me try something:

Message to the band:

Larry, Bono, Edge, Adam?! I really don't know if this message will reach you! But maybe there are some guys at u2.com who are connected with you. So, if you don't know what to do on the evening before the first show, when all is set up: We would be happy about some support. Especially, we could need someone on guitar. So maybe you'd like to join us on top of One Tree Hill! 🙂

Good luck to you all, and best wishes from Ireland. Greg is well remembered by all U2 fans old enough to remember him. (and I mean that in good taste).

My abiding memory is his 'front of house' mike control during UF tour and Live Aid! RIP.

The Facebook event link isn’t working. It’s saying event not available! OOPs nevermind. Was able access from my laptop instead. I have to get a SIM card for my phone upon landing so not sure what my communication ability will be but if I can get on wifi somewhere please post updates in the Facebook group I think that will be easier for me to access! SO excited!!

Great!!! We have a guitar player!!! Thank you, Gerry! That's wonderful!

Just another question: Has anyone an idea how I can get with this sign into the concert on Friday night? I've heard that they only allow signs with a maximum size of A3 (29 x 42 cm) ... I guess, I have to smuggle it in anyhow.

It would be advisable to follow their procedures — remember that they have the power to eject you from the premises. Don't take unnecessary risks...

Yeah! There you are absolutely right! I won't do that! Thank you!

Basti - I've got to agree with Max - not worth the risk of being ejected.  Now I'd like to take this opportunity to brag that during the Joshua Tree Tour '87 I smuggled a twin-size bed sheet banner into the arena in my pants.  That takes real talent.  And very baggy pants. : )
