Ok, so I am going to try something I have not done before.
(although have seen others do),
I am going to take a stab at an intellectual interpretation of a U2 lyric.
I have never actually read a lyric of theirs before this.
Here is my stab at this incomplete and unscored "song"
-- just because it is the middle of the night and, well, why not?
“The Little Things That Give You Away”
"The night gave you a song, --> self-referential, the story of the night they first heard the Ramones
a light had been turned on, --> resulting in his skull cracking open, light leaking out, and the collective decision being made, on the spot, to go out and become rock stars and save the world. :-) Good call!
You walked out in the world
like you belonged there --> all four lines self-referential,obviously :-)
As easy as a breeze,
each heart was yours to tease
Is it only me who sees there’s something wrong here --> Here I begin to wander in the moonlight... Did the narrator just change in this line?
It’s the little things that give you away --> no idea about these two lines
The words you cannot say
Your big mouth in the way --> self-referential :-)
It’s the little things that reveal and betray --> ?
Has the hunter now become the prey --> possibly also self-referential. There is a "hunter" referred to in "Wild Horses," no?
It’s the little things, the little things
That give you away
I saw you on the stairs
You didn’t notice I was there
That’s cos you were busy talking at me
Not to me --> I cannot recall which song, but I am fairly certain these lines have been used before...I think in a song that came out sometime between Vertigo and 360.
You were high above the storm --> reminds me of: "You are so high, higher than everyone. Where are you in the Cedars of Lebanon?" I think my wording might be slightly off from the actual lyric. I really like that song, btw.
A hurricane being born --> I love these two lines together. But I don't know if the "hurricane" is the same entity that is "high above the storm," or if the storm that one is high above, is turning into a hurricane? It is not clear whether hurricane references a situation or person. Maybe both?
But this freedom, it might cost you your liberty --> quite possibly an election reference. The U.S. freely elected as President a demagouge and likely stooge of a foreign adversary in a "free and fair" election.
side note: I quibble with this claim-- this was not really a free and fair election. Much of the population was under the influence of a Russian disinformation psy-op. The electorate was tainted. We've seen this story before, but NOT IN THE UNITED STATES!!
It’s the little things that give you away
The words you cannot say
Your big mouth in the way
It’s the little things that reveal and betray
Has the hunter now become the prey
It’s the little things, the little things that give you away"
Bono: Theres a very big tangent at the end of this, that’s very revealing – but that’s enough for now. --> this is just him being a tease :-)
So, there you have it.
I was not able to make much more than hash, I'm afraid.
My weakness, surely, and not that of the lyric.
I am confident once the lyric becomes song,
all will become intuitively clear to me,
as usual. :-)
