chris1043
Larry is the father and he could be protecting him but he's also hugging his son as if Larry was a child, so this is why Larry is kneeling down? I would think when one adult hugs another adult, both should be standing. However, when my 9 year old niece gives me a hug, her face is against my stomach because she is not as tall as I am. So I could see him kneeling down for this matter. I don't know why Larry is kneeling down, maybe it was just casual while they were shooting different pictures, or maybe someone suggested it. It just made me think about that. Also, it could be possible that they made it intentionally, so they could cut Larry's son face in the picture, probably to keep his privacy a little. I know that some men don't feel comfortable showing affection to this sons because of their education, because men are sometimes taught to not to show their feelings. I respect them, but I find it so very beautiful and healthty. It is really an intimate photograph, for me it just shows one of the deepest forms of love, from a father to his son. Also, being a judoka I guess I have no fear of "touching" lol. thank you :-)
chris1043
If it weren't men giving a hug, would you mind it? If it wasn't Larry, would you mind it? Just think on that. Larry doesn't show his feelings so much in public. Many fans describe him as serious or shy, whatever... so for me that's the point. We're not used to see him at this way, so naked and open to the audience. I'm sure he's a great guy among family and friends but sometimes people have a different opinion about him because he's been always reserved, specially with his family. I think he was very brave to take this photo and to show his affection to Elvis in public. I assume his son's name is Elvis? Yes! I don't really keep up with the names of their children and family stuff and initially I was like 'heh' cos I'd forgotten he had a son called Elvis!!! ok, thank you!! Subscriber kwaite Posted September 26, 2014 Subscriber Share Posted September 26, 2014 It strikes me as a father asking forgiveness from the son- for allowing a loss of innocence to occur? For wishing the "child" to be innocent for a bit longer when the child wants to be an adult? This particularly struck with the double CD and SLABT- Alternate Perspective version- not remix or alternate version- but perspective. Subscriber monica martino Posted September 26, 2014 Subscriber Share Posted September 26, 2014 It strikes me as a father asking forgiveness from the son- for allowing a loss of innocence to occur? Perfect! My same first thought. A father trying to protect his son or either asking forgiveness for not having protected him. But also as I said previously a way to show their desire to be tight to their past (Boy cover 2.0? )

Yes, this is what I was thinking too, you beat me to it, well said.
Subscriber PeterM1 Posted September 26, 2014 Subscriber Share Posted September 26, 2014 Some fascinating comments in this thread that encourage me to add my penneth. Ever since the unveiling of SOI 17 days ago it has been causing controversy for various reasons and more importantly got people talking about U2 again. With this cover art that is obviously going to continue. Bono has already spoken about the thrill he gets when the likes of The Miracle are played on the radio and that "They get that not everyone likes U2" Maybe this cover is going to polarise opinion even more, even amongst fans. Personally I think it is entirely appropriate on what is by a long distance their most personal album to date. Also the very first U2 album I bought was War which is still one of my favourites. Therefore I'm loving the echoes of the artwork on both Boy and War
Subscriber Shannon387 Posted September 26, 2014 Subscriber Share Posted September 26, 2014 I just think its ment to be photographed this way. Art is on this world to raise discussion. Everybody sees something else! Look at artists like van Gogh. He sold only one painting in his living years. He was way ahead of his time. His work got very famous after his death... In his living years he was very poor and couldn't convince anyone to sell his paintings. Other people didn't think he was that good... I can see the innocence in the work of the photographer. Thinking about the early days. I really like it. (I really love black and white photography) But I also understand that some people see something else in it. Thats just a part of who we are Well said. I think given people's diverse backgrounds, you are naturally going to see this from your own perspective. I don't in the lease bit find this creepy at all, and to be honest I don't really see how people are. I think people's perspective of this cover being homoerotic or pedophilia it's a touchy subject and I'm just not going to go there, except to wonder what have seen in your life which would lead to jump to that conclusion from viewing this, but eh whatever everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think the band went into the releasing of this album knowing full well there would be a very diverse reaction. They've been around for a while, I think they know us by now. lol I can understand how people may not be comfortable when things aren't presented to them in the way they have become accustomed to. It's new, it's different, it makes you think. Much like their music and this album has. Which all-in-all I think is the point. They are at a point in their career where they can be experimental and do things differently. I'm actually happy to see they are exercising this right. Subscriber U2LAWoman Posted September 27, 2014 Subscriber Share Posted September 27, 2014 I prefer the itunes cover myself. Yet I get what U2 is trying to say here and it's surprising and shocking at first glance. Not so shocking the photo but that we get to see Larry and his boy on the cover!! How exciting for them and after reading Bono's comments on the news page. I have no doubt U2 know what they're doing and the comments about them being free with their personal songs only reflects this black and white photograph and love Larry's tattoo. Why isn't anyone talking about that..lol.. and doesn't Larry look just great, it is a sweet photo when you think about U2 and their history. Most of the people who don't know U2 well enough or get them. Might have some doubts about the cover and it's meaning.

Subscriber davide78 Posted September 27, 2014 Author Subscriber Share Posted September 27, 2014 Uhm, I prefer itunes cover or a full band photo on cover, not this of Larry and his son.
