I was there and Bono signed my cd cover. I was amazed at how much quality time he spent with almost everyone. Wow!!! I have been able to be at another artist's meet and greet and wow, I can SEE THE DIFFERENCE!! Bono cares!! Look at his smile in this photo that I took. It represents his character very well !!!

I call it a clever marketing move by the band to boost ticket sales, just like the supposed broken back Bono suffered when the 360 tour 2nd North American leg had slow ticket sales. Anything to maximize profits before they become irrelevant.
why would the BIGGEST rock band in the WORLD need a boost to their ticket sales? They are already selling out!!!

I didn't say I dislike all the snippets but they are becoming more and more and it just takes up time when they could be playing something else you paid to see.
Or, if they removed the snippets, they would just play the same songs and wrap things up sooner for the night?
What I can't get is that it wouldn't be U2 without the snippets. Are they snippets or are they segues? I thought the latter.
Right from UABRS on the band have segued other songs into their own - whether it be during 11 o'clock or more overtly in The Electric Co - and it's something I loved then and still do now. It's part of what makes them who they are - the confidence to share other influences within their own music.
U2 puts their own twist on snippets (cover tunes), right? It's not like they're copying the song exactly. It shows creativity and that U2 is NOT boring.

Personally, I love it when they add the "snippets" of other songs (but that's just me). Also, love it when Bono talks about... well, pretty much anything!
Whenever I watch U2 videos on Youtube, and someone has cut out the part where Bono is talking between the songs, it makes me sad.I agree with you. I like when the singer mentions the city where the show is in the song - like I was just watching 360 last night and Bono said something. I'll watch it again now because I need to know. Ha ha. One time I saw Bon Jovi at a small club as part of a radio show contest (I lost, but snuck in anyway at the back door around the corner). So inbetween songs Jon mentioned the name of the club and the contest, so when that song was included in a special live album, I knew I was tehre!!!

Probably not them personally but I imagine someone in their circle will to gauge reaction. Although for a band like U2 its a very small pool of people to look at.
The thing with setlists is, as someone said before their tied to the production so it allows for less changes. For exmaple a lot of time and effort when in to all the vide effects etc. of Cedarwood Road so its highly unlikely it will change. These kind of productions are great and the idea is quite cool but it does cause some restrictions.
I would have preferred to have a set up similar to Elevation, in fact given how much they've said how they want to be indoors and the whole Innocence thing, I was surpised to see they had such a huge production. Sometimes it feels the show revolves around the screen and not the songs.

If they stopped extending songs by putting so many snippets in them etc. they could probably play a few extra songs...
I don't mind the odd one but the Paul Simon cover? Honestly it's not neccessary.
I haven't been to a show yet, hoping I will get to next year.

This I agree with. I thought the 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' snippet during Where the Streets Have No Name at Glastonbury was a bit cringey. Plus they have enough of their own material for it to be able to stand on its own two feet, without needing to throw in bits of other people's work.
so hearing Van Morrison's Gloria, or Bob Marley snippets, God Part II opened me more to Lennon, the Dylan influences and many, many more i got from U2.
Back, waaaaaayyy back when I was a Richie Sambora solo fan, (he's the ex guitarist for Bon Jovi), Richie covered a lot of Beatles on his solo tour so he is the reason I like the Beatles today.

They're not 3 hours, usually between 2 hours and 2 1/2 hours.

I've seen U2 4 times, nice to know I'm not a "real" fan.
I don't understand your post. I have a friend who is a HUGE fan. He has almost all rare releases, cd singles and lots of other stuff, but he has never been to one concert.
On the other hand, I have another friend who goes to 3 or 4 shows every tour but is not interested in their collaborations with other artists. The guitar player did a Christmas song and recorded an instrumental on another album. When I asked her about her opinion of them, she said she didn't buy them yet. Turns out she never did buy them or from itunes. She just likes the concert atmosphere and to drool over the singer who she has a crush on, but me, I am interested in the music and try to buy whatever I can so I can listen to it. I go to only one show a tour.
See the difference. There is no clear definition of what a loyal fan should be.
It was a bit of a dig at some who seem to like elevating themselves into another league above other fans because of how many shows they've been to, or as vertigojds pointed out half-shows. Someone who's been to zero shows can be as much of a fan as someone who's been to 100. Someone who's been to zero shows can be a bigger fan than someone who's been to 100. As far as I'm concerned there are no "diehard" fans or "real" fans, just fans.
As for the setlist not changing from night to night, there's a very good reason: keeping it fair. If a show in a city on the other side of the world had a set (apart from the new songs and staples) with the likes of The Fly, Mofo, Exit, God Part 2, Hawkmoon, Discotheque, All I Want Is You, and then the setlist at my hometown had Grace, Wild Honey, Peace on Earth, Some Days Are Better Than Others, I wouldn't be too happy.
But of course if you don't want to hear the same songs 60 times, there is a very simple solution; don't go to 60 shows.

One other thing in AtU2's report of the final LA show:
""Every Breaking Wave" is delayed for several minutes when Edge's e-stage piano has problems. As the crew tries to get that taken care of, Bono stands on the e-stage talking to fans in the first few rows of general admission. He tells the crowd that U2 intends to play "The Crystal Ballroom" later in the tour -- something he said a couple weeks ago while meeting fans before a show."
