Watching the Wright Stuff on ch5 (uk) and Bono's apology has made an appearance, seems the apology is making almost as much of a stir as the release did, shame the media aren't reporting it accurately
I think you're right, it's all the bashers expectations, I really don't think it would have done them any damage not to apologise. If any potential new fans have been alienated then an apology isn't going to change that
To be honest, I don't really believe they are sorry, I'm sure they think all the fuss is as ridiculous as we do. I'm sure they were just looking after the wider public image, they didn't have to allow that question at all, but they did. Ever generous even to those that don't deserve it
